Paradigm Shift Paper: Saying "Auf Wiedersehen" to German Heritage in America after World War One
In Rhetoric and Civic Life 137 I examined a significant paradigm shift in a field of interest. Given my background in history, politics, and German, I decided to analyze the perception of German-American heritage before and after the First World War. This paper explores the immense variety of propaganda and bigoted actions taken against German-Americans because of rash, paranoid policies during wartime -- and draws parallels between the events of one hundred years ago and today.

TED Talk
In conjunction with the paradigm shift paper, I delivered a five-minuted TED talk about German-American heritage before and after the First World War. While I applied public speaking skills I developed as a docent, the TED talk introduced a different multimedia format than one experiences in a museum. You can watch it by clicking the title link above.

Historical Analysis: The Role of Language in Social Constructs of Turn-of-the-Century Egypt
In my honors introductory course to the history of the Middle East, I read the memoirs of two prominent Egyptian innovators, Huda Shaarawi's Harem Years and Taha Hussein's The Days. While both faced numerous challenges based on their sex and disability, respectively, in their pursuit of education and their establishment of their own rights, I chose to focus on how their mastery of and access to language education reflected the advantages or barriers of their sex, class, and societal position.

Persuasive Essay: "Die Ausbildung ist Wichtig" - Education is Important
While education is sometimes treated as a privilege, it is fundamentally a right. Creating this essay for my advanced German composition class challenged me to eloquently express my beliefs and create a concrete argument in my second language.

Blog: Finden Mich in Freiburg
I was extremely fortunate to spend the spring semester of my sophomore year abroad in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, studying at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität. I enrolled directly in the university, and thus faced the unique, immersive challenge of taking courses with other German students, and fully engaging in the German education system. Over the course of my studies and travels, I blogged both about serious topics and light-hearted observations. You can follow my adventure here.
